Author: The UK press has made a big deal of companies willing to provide and install PV solar panels on people’s homes in return for these people signing over the payments they would have received from the feed-in tariff. The homeowners loses their roof space (big deal, who uses it?) in return for free electricity.
The press was not exactly enthusiastically behind the free PV solar panel schemes but homeowners who couldn’t afford to buy PV solar panels were clamoring for this service. The press claimed that these people should be financing the solar panels but with interest rates what they are and the fact that some people could not get the financing, this was not always a realistic option.
Unfortunately, it is not very likely these companies will be able to continue to offer free PV solar panels to homeowners now that the feed-in tariff payments have been cut in half. The free solar panel and installation industry is in a state of flux and but it is still possible to find companies that are still making this offer. For home owners, it will mean a savings of 30% to 50% off their electricity bills, a significant savings when so many people are in fuel poverty. Of course, only home owners with ideal roof facing south are likely to be able to take advantage of this great offer.
