What Does Travel Medical Insurance Cover?
When you are traveling outside of your country it is important to consider travel insurance. Travel insurance will cover many of the unexpected events that can occur while away from home. More importantly, travel medical insurance will cover the costs of any treatment you would need in the event of accident or illness while in another country. Anyone that is traveling outside of the country should have proper coverage to ensure they have a safe return.
What Does Travel Medical Insurance Cover?
There are many different policies available for travelers. The following list will cover the most common policy types.
• Comprehensive Medical. These types of policies are for people that do not have any health care coverage. These policies will cover most events, illnesses and accidents while you are traveling abroad.
• Emergency Medical Coverage. This type of travel health insurance will cover you in the event that you need emergency medical care due to accident or illness. It will not cover long-term care. Once you return from your trip, your regular insurance should cover any additional treatments.
• Medical Evacuation Policy. This type of policy will cover you in the event that you need to be air-lifted back to your home because the injuries you have sustained cannot be treated in this area. This type of policy will not cover accidents that occur during extreme sports.
International travel insurance can also be purchased to cover:
• Trip cancellation or interruption. The cancellation or interruption must fall under one of the insurers covered categories such as: medical illness of you or your immediate family. Acts of terrorism or war may or may not be included.
• Supplier Interruption. These policies have declined in availability since 2001, but may still be available for certain areas or providers. Supplier interruption is classified as when arrangements were made through specific carriers (airlines, cruise lines) and hotels for travel and when you arrive they become bankrupt.
• Rental Car Coverage. These policies will cover damage or theft to your rented car.
